Meet Susie & Jim: Always Room for One More

Some people just make everything feel a little safer, a little sturdier, just by being there.

That’s Susie and Jim.

She’s the one with the clipboard, always two steps ahead of everyone else, with a kind word and a plan to make things right. He’s the retired shop teacher who’s always ready to help, to fix what’s broken, to crack a joke at just the right moment.

Together, they’re the kind of people who hold everyone else up, even when no one remembers to ask if they need holding, too.

They’ve opened their home and their hearts more than once, and though neither of them would call themselves perfect, there’s no denying the warmth they bring to the group. They remind you that family isn’t just who you’re born to, it’s who makes room for you, over and over again.

Susie and Jim aren’t perfect, but they’re steady. Even with their own quiet aches, they always seem to have room for one more.

If this were a movie and I got to pick the cast: Wendi McLendon-Covey would play Susie (with a little aging makeup perhaps) and J. K. Simmons could definitely be Jim.

These are just two of the people you’ll meet in my upcoming novel, a story about found family and second chances. Come back next week to meet someone new!

I’m still editing and shaping this story, working to bring it into the world. But if you’d like updates, sneak peeks, and behind-the-scenes notes along the way, join my newsletter!
